March is Read Aloud Month

There is an easy way to improve your children’s chances at school success. It will entertain and delight them. It will strengthen the bonds between you and your children. And it is virtually free.

Sound too good to be true? Actually, it isn’t. The magical method: taking time to read aloud to your child.

In an era of high-stakes testing and education reforms and revolutions, research has repeatedly proved that one simple parenting technique is among the most effective. Children who are read aloud to by parents get a head start in language and literacy skills and go to school better prepared.

In other words, reading that bedtime story may not only entertain and soothe Johnny, it may also develop his vocabulary, improve his ability to learn to read, and – perhaps most important – foster a lifelong love of books and reading.

Parent Workshops Coming Up

We are nearing the end of the school year and it’s time for the kids to show what they know.  Please join us for free parent workshops on April 7, 21, and 28 from 8:30-9:30 to learn how to get your child ready for the upcoming statewide testing.  The first topic, helping your children succeed on achievement tests, will be offered on April 7.  Hope to see you there!

Read Aloud to Children Every Day

Did you know that only 48% of children are read to each day?  Reading aloud promotes language development, vocabulary, and literacy skills.   It also instills a love of reading while knowledge is gained and shared between the parent and child.  Reading aloud encourages bonding and the sharing of memories.  Is there anything better than sharing a good book?

Our First Ever Spelling Bee

Juarez-Lincoln students participated in our first-ever Spelling Bee.  Teachers held classroom spelling bees before the school competition.  It was quite exciting!  The top three students from each grade level participated in the district spelling bee.  We had 3 students earn top honors in the district contest!  1st grader Jordan Parin took 1st place, Gwendolyn took 2nd place in the 3rd grade division, and Tiena took 2nd place in the 6th grade division.  We are so proud of our Eagles!

Traveling Stories Assemblies on Wednesday

IMG_1011For the first time in her life, Emily Moberly found herself living in a city with no access to books. As an avid reader from childhood, this was a devastating environment for her. She was living in Honduras teaching English and Sociology at a local high school. She recognized how the lack of books also had a negative impact on her students. Although teenagers, most had never fallen in love with reading.

On Wednesday, January 13, Emily will share with students how her experience in Honduras inspired her to start Traveling Stories, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids fall in love with reading. Since 2010 Emily and her team have established eight international libraries and nine literacy programs in Southern California, including one in Imperial Beach. More than 3,000 children improve their reading skills through Traveling Stories programs each year.

For her work with Traveling Stories, Emily was named one of the “Top 10 Female Entrepreneurs to Watch in San Diego” by Forbes Magazine; Microsoft featured her in their Do More campaign; 10 News and LEAD San Diego awarded her a Leadership Award and this year San Diego Magazine named her a finalist for the San Diego Woman of the Year award.

Traveling Stories sponsors a StoryTent at the Imperial Beach Farmers Market every Friday from 3:30pm to 5pm. It is a free program designed to motivate kids to read. All Juarez-Lincoln students are invited to check it out!
