Literature Character Parade on Tuesday

Highlights from Red Ribbon Week

First, a big thank you to the agencies that made our Law Enforcement Day such a success last week.  High fives to our PTA and staff who worked so hard to make Friday’s Fall Festival such a success.  The kids loved it!

Tomorrow your child will receive a yellow form that needs to be completed right away.  This is a mandated district policy that all parents have to do every year, so please check with your child tomorrow night, sign it, and have your child return it to his or her teacher on Tuesday.  This is very important and I appreciate your attention to this.

Tuesday is our annual Literature Character Parade.  Kids may dress up as a book character and walk with their class during the parade on the blacktop.  Please ensure your child wears an appropriate costume for school, also nothing too scary or gory.  Those costumes can be used for trick-or-treating later, but at school we limit costumes to book characters.  Everyone is invited to join us Tuesday morning at 8:45.

The Positive Parenting Program has been moved from Tuesday to Thursday this week so parents can join us for the parade.  Class will begin at 8:30am in the PDC.

Law Enforcement Day is October 24th

Please plan to join us for our 4th annual Law Enforcement Day on Tuesday, October 24th from 8:30-11:00 on our playground.  We are expecting the San Diego Police Department, Chula Vista Police Department, Border Patrol, San Diego Fire and Rescue, the Sheriff’s Office, and Navy personnel to set up demonstrations and exhibits for our students.  We hope to have a helicopter land on our field again this year!

If you or a member of your family is active duty or retired military, please wear your uniform.  Students and staff will wear red to show our allegiance to a drug-free lifestyle and making good choices.  The week of October 23-27 is Red Ribbon Week in all Chula Vista schools.  Hope to see you on the 24th!

Welcome to Mr. Rienick

Please welcome our new Associate Principal Mr. Rienick to the Juarez-Lincoln staff.  Mr. Rienick was most recently the Associate Principal at Veterans Elementary and has an extensive background in mathematics amongst the other subject areas.  When not at school, Mr. Rienick enjoys running, playing golf, and taking long walks on the beach.

Welcome to our newest staff members!

Silvia Flores, Associate Principal:  Mrs. Flores was most recently the Associate Principal at Rogers Elementary for two years.  She was a teacher and literacy coach at Otay Elementary for many years.  Mrs. Flores is the proud parent of two grown children and a 14 year old son who make her life complete.  She is a passionate and caring educator who enjoys hiking, nature, dancing, fitness, and cooking in her spare time.

Giulia Longo, 4th grade teacher:  Ms. Longo is starting her fifth year of teaching and her fourth year of teaching 4th grade. Her parents are from Parma, Italy and Ms. Longo goes back every summer to visit family. She speaks Italian fluently. In her spare time, Giulia likes to read, travel, and cook.

Cinthya Hernandez, School Psychologist:  Ms. Hernandez is super excited to be a part of the Juarez-Lincoln Family! She is an Aztec for Life (completed both undergrad and graduate studies at San Diego State University). During her 4-year School Psych program, she had the opportunity to have work with amazing teams in three school districts. She is the oldest of 5, was born in Guadalajara Mexico, recently got engaged (wedding date TBD ;D ), loves being outdoors and enjoys nature, and has a crazy dog that likes to chew on couches for fun.

Sydney Masterson, 2nd grade teacher:  Mrs. Masterson has been teaching for over 12 years and is thrilled to join the Juarez-Lincoln community.  When she’s not at work, she keeps busy by shuffling her three kids (ages 8, 4 and 2) around to the zoo, Legoland or the beach.

Melissa Calderon, kindergarten teacher:  This is Ms. Calderon’s second year of teaching, and is her first year teaching kindergarten! Prior to becoming a teacher she was an instructional assistant in a kindergarten class and loved being in the classroom. In her free time she enjoys running, reading, and baking. She’s really looking forward to this school year and joining the Juarez-Lincoln community.

Did you know that Samsung recently donated 5 televisions to Juarez-Lincoln? Each of these 55″, 65″, and 70″ tv’s now hang in our classrooms and replace the old pull-down screens we used to use.  The size and quality of the screen is so much better for our kids to see!  We also bought AppleTV’s for each classroom so teachers can stream from their laptops right into the Samsung TV’s.  Thank you Samsung for improving our students’ educational experience while at school!

Also, 2nd-6th Grade students take the Level Set district reading test this week. Please ensure you child gets plenty of rest and has a good breakfast. Encourage them to do their best!

What will your child be doing during summer break? Please join us on Wednesday May 17 at 6:00 pm for an informational session about the YMCA’s STEAM summer camp at Juarez-Lincoln. We are so excited to have this opportunity for our students on the J-L campus! Come get the details Wednesday night.

Friday, May 19 is Bike & Walk to school day! There will be a Bike Safety Rodeo after school at 1:45.

Friday, May 19 at 8:30 am is the ELAC/Coffee Chat. We will be recognizing our students who are being reclassified as Fluent–English Proficient (RFEP) at this meeting.

Residency Verification begins for the 2017/18 school year on Friday, May 19. All families must prove they live in our school boundaries in order for your child to be placed on a class list for the next school year. We are open for residency verification beginning Friday, May 19 between 8:45 and 11:15 am and from 1:45 to 3:30 pm. SPANISH Verification Letter

Purple Up for Military Kids!

April is Month of the Military Child, a time to recognize our military and veteran-connected children and youth for their service and sacrifice.

Today, nearly two million military-connected children and youth (birth through age 22) live with perpetual challenges presented by frequent moves, parental deployments, and a host of life transitions that include reintegration and dealing with profoundly changed parents. The well-being of these children depends heavily on a network of supportive adults.

Grit, determination, and perseverance are a few characteristics of the resilient trailblazers we know as military kids. These traits are a result of the challenges they persist through, and contribute to strong character development and hardiness.

April is a time to celebrate our military and veteran-connected children, the vast majority of whom attend public schools and live in nearly every zip code in the country. Look for opportunities to show your appreciation for the military and veteran-connected children in your lives or communities, and thank them for sharing their parents with the country.

 

March is Read Aloud Month

There is an easy way to improve your children’s chances at school success. It will entertain and delight them. It will strengthen the bonds between you and your children. And it is virtually free.

Sound too good to be true? Actually, it isn’t. The magical method: taking time to read aloud to your child.

In an era of high-stakes testing and education reforms and revolutions, research has repeatedly proved that one simple parenting technique is among the most effective. Children who are read aloud to by parents get a head start in language and literacy skills and go to school better prepared.

In other words, reading that bedtime story may not only entertain and soothe Johnny, it may also develop his vocabulary, improve his ability to learn to read, and – perhaps most important – foster a lifelong love of books and reading.

Navy Command Adopts J-L!

We are excited to announce that one of the local Navy commands has formally adopted our school.  This is the beginning of a partnership where servicemen and women will visit our school each month to provide mentoring to students and assistance with school wide events.  Pictured above is the Welcoming Ceremony. The first event that will include our Navy partners will be on March 2 when we celebrate Read Across America Day. Anchors aweigh!

2nd Annual Parent Academy
