September is Attendance Awareness Month

School attendance is critical.  Strong attendance in elementary school is a key component to:

  • improving students’  future graduation rates.
  • increasing their academic achievement.
  • giving young people the best chance at success in their adult lives.

Join the Attendance Awareness Campaign and make a difference for in our community.  For more information please go to http://bit.ly/1oqfID7

Walk and Bike to School Day

We had high level participation at our first Walk and Bike to School Day last week. Students, parents and staff met up at different spots in our community and began the day together.  San Diego Police provided traffic control while Circulate San Diego and the San Diego Bike Coalition supplied personnel and incentives.  We encourage families to walk or ride together as often as possible.  Official Bike and Walk Days will be held monthly.  A Safety Day and Bike Rodeo are scheduled for Friday, October 28 so students can learn and practice personal safety skills while walking and riding.

Fitness Fun This Week

Our 4th graders will participate in swim lessons at the Border View YMCA this week.  Under the supervision of certified lifeguards and swim instructors, kids will practice their water skills four afternoons for an hour each day.

We will also have our first Walk/Bike to School Day on Thursday morning at 7:30am.  There are three meet-up spots:

  • Kostner and Kimsue
  • Twining and Arey
  • Twining and Coleman

Let’s make this a family event.  If you live too far from the school, consider parking along Twining and joining a group that is walking to school.  It’s a great way to get our bodies and minds warmed up for the day.  Parking lot congestion is also reduced!

In addition to school sports teams, we plan to have a choir, ukulele club, and add an outdoor mural to the wall near our garden.  The 2nd graders pictured above are recording scientific information outside.  Lots of great things are happening at Juarez-Lincoln!

Have a Great Summer!

There is an easy way to improve your child’s chances in school.  It is fun, interesting, and creates bonds between your child and you.  And it’s virtually free!

Read aloud to your children!

Children who are read aloud to by parents get a head start in language and literacy skills and go to school better prepared. In other words, reading that bedtime story may not only entertain and soothe Johnny, it may also develop his vocabulary, improve his ability to learn to read, and – perhaps most important – foster a lifelong love of books and reading.
