Superintendent Message CVESD Virtual Academy: 2021-2022 school year

Dear parents/guardians,

It is important to note that more than 40 percent of our students remain in distance learning. Yet, the distance learning instructional format is scheduled to expire at the end of the current 2020-21 school year, in accordance with California law. Governor Gavin Newsom has announced that the state is preparing for a full reopening of California’s economy on June 15—ending the “tier” system of restrictions that also impacted schools. While we look forward to bringing all of our staff members and students back for traditional in-person instruction for the 2021-22 school year in late July, we are aware of parent interest in their children continuing in an online instructional model, similar to this year’s distance learning model.

In order to provide such an educational option for our students/families, our District is exploring development of a virtual school/online academy. This platform will provide both synchronous (in-person) and asynchronous (online) opportunities for our students, delivered in a virtual environment. Our District would like your input in development of this alternative model to traditional in-person learning. It is important to note that the provided instructional minutes that were delivered through distance learning will no longer apply. A preliminary proposal envisions a district-wide “virtual academy” that would not necessarily be tied to or associated with a student’s school of residence.

I welcome any of your comments or novel ideas regarding this option. Please let us know your interest by responding to the prompt below.

Sincerely, Francisco Escobedo, Ed.D. Superintendent

Sunday Messenger, April 12-16, 2021

Hello Juarez-Lincoln Families,

Big week coming up everyone! Hence the longer-than-usual Sunday Messenger this week. We are all very excited to begin this new phase in learning alongside our community.

Hybrid and Distance Learning Beginning April 12, 2021

The Chula Vista Elementary School District will begin reopening schools for hybrid in-person learning on April 12, 2021.  In January and February, parents completed a survey and indicated whether they wanted their child to be enrolled in the in-person hybrid model or continue in the distance learning program once CVESD schools begin safely reopening. Beginning April 12, we will begin these two distinct programs.

Throughout the first week, we will have staff available on campus to answer questions and to support students and family in transitioning back to in-person learning.

  • For dismissal, Kindergarten and 1st grade students will need to be picked up in-person by an authorized adult near the Kindergarten gate. To add an authorized adult for pick-up, please visit the office in person. You will need a valid photo ID.
  • Park only in designated areas. Do not park in staff parking lot. Additional parking in residential areas.
  • Throughout the first week, we will have staff available on campus to answer questions and to support students and family in transitioning back to in-person learning.

Home Health Screening for students in hybrid

  • Beginning April 13, 2021, all students who participate in the Hybrid Model must be sent to school with the Home Health Screening laminated form attached to their backpack.
  • Home Health Screening Form- click HERE
  • Forms will be distributed on April 12.
  • By sending your child to school with this form, it verifies you have screened your child for the listed symptoms and safety points.

COVID-19 Viral Testing Program for CVESD Students and Staff

EMAIL MESSAGE SENT FROM OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS

Dear Parents/Guardians:

You will receive an email and text message from a company called “Primary” to register for the CVESD COVID-19 Antigen Testing Program.

We are proud to announce the launch of a new, free COVID-19 viral testing program—a “rapid” antigen testing program that will provide results in as little as 15 minutes. The program is part of our COVID-19 mitigation strategy and is made possible through the training and support of medical professionals.

Next week, April 12 – 16, testing hours at the Education Services and Support Center, 84 East J Street, Chula Vista, CA  91910 will be from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. and students will be invited to test.  At this location, we will have on-demand testing, which means that we are accepting walk-ins, no appointments are necessary.

On April 19, we will start a two-week rotation at each of our school sites.  These testing opportunities will be by appointment.

Juarez Lincoln will offer testing every other Tuesday, beginning April 20, 2021.

For your convenience you will be able to make appointments at any CVESD school if it works better for your schedule.  In addition, employees and students will have the opportunity to test at the Education Services and Support Center, 84 East J Street, Chula Vista, CA  91910, every Friday if you are unable to attend your school’s testing or would like to be tested more frequently.

Each student and staff member will receive an email and text message with a link to register from a company called “Primary,” so check your inbox (and junk/spam mail).  Click on the link to register/provide consent before you arrive, and it will save you time once you arrive on site to be tested.  Please note the link is personalized, so please do not share it with others.  When you have registered once, you will not need to register again to make future appointments. You will not be able to change specific information in the registration process but can ask a testing staff member to make changes for you while on site. Texts and emails form Primary will be sent to your contacts on file with the district as of 4/7/2021.

Once testing starts at schools, students do not need to be accompanied by an adult, IF the parent has already provided consent through the on-line registration process and an appointment is made; however, students will not be taken out of academic instruction on site for testing.  Please make appointments for students before and after their academic instruction on site.

Diagnostic tests that determine if someone has an active COVID-19 infection fall into two categories: antigen tests, which are mostly used for rapid testing, and molecular and PCR tests. Antigen tests, also called rapid diagnostic tests, detect specific proteins on the surface of the coronavirus.

IMPORTANT: If an employee or student is experiencing symptoms, we ask you to get a PCR test at a free county facility or with a medical provider. Unfortunately, the antigen tests used by CVESD cannot be used for return to work or school if an individual is symptomatic, per the County’s Symptom Decision Tree.  The antigen testing program is for surveillance purposes, in order to quickly determine if individuals are positive and remove such individuals and their contacts from campus as soon as possible.

If you have any trouble registering or need information changed in the system, please visit any of the testing locations and testing staff can assist you and provide testing at that time. If the information is wrong in the registration system, please also contact your school to ensure the information is changed in the school database. Please do not call the school to change information in the testing registration site.

Updated School Schedules Beginning April 12

On April 12, Juarez-Lincoln will begin open its doors to in-person learning via a hybrid model. Some of our students will participate in the Hybrid program and others will continue in the Distance Learning program. Please note there is an AM Hybrid Cohort and a PM Hybrid Cohort.

All families should have received a School Messenger with the placement of their child.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s current teacher or the office at 619-690-9222.

Hybrid and Distance Learning Video

We are very excited that beginning April 12, 2021, Juarez-Lincoln will embark on a new beginning. We will be re-opening our doors to some of our students for in-person learning via hybrid model, and some students will remain in distance learning.

The hybrid model is for students whose parents indicated they preferred this program for their child in a survey sent in January and February 2021. This video explains what you may expect beginning April 12, 2021 whether you chose the Hybrid Model or the Distance Learning Model for your child. The video includes AM and PH cohort schedules, Ingress and Egress information, and general safety information. I recommend that all of our families take 15 minutes to watch this informative video. Thank you!

Please contact your child’s teacher to learn what whether your child was placed in the AM Hybrid Cohort, PM Hybrid Cohort, or continuing in the Distance Learning program. You can also ask your child’s current teacher who your child’s teacher will be beginning April 12. On Wednesday, you will also receive a School Messenger with your child’s placement.

Thank you everyone!

Mr. Pollack, Principal
