April is Month of the Military Child
April is month of the military child. Military connected children make up a very special part of our nation’s population.
80% of military connected children attend public school in the United States. In CVESD, 9.6% of our students are military-connected (2,820 total). Although young, these brave sons and daughters stand in support of their military parents. As they face circumstances unique to their lives-such as navigating multiple moves and schools to shouldering repeated deployments of a parent, these children are examples of resilience in the military community.
The purpose of “Month of the Military Child” is to recognize students’ unique contributions and sacrifices on behalf of our country. Activities at Juarez-Lincoln this month to recognize our military-connected students and families include:
Photograph– We would love to place a photograph of your child and service member(s) on a hallway bulletin board for everyone to see. The photograph will be returned at the end of the month. Please have your child turn in a photograph (with their name and teacher’s name on the back) as soon as possible to their teacher or the front office.
Purple Up! For Military Kids!– Wear purpleon Wednesdays during April. Wearing purple will indicate that your child is military-connected and will also show support for other military-connected children.
Poem writing– What does it mean to be a military child? Your child can write a poem ORdraw a picture of their experience and it will be entered in a drawing for a special prize, which will be announced on 4/29/19. Please have your child turn in their poem ORdrawing by 4/22/19to their teacher or the front office.
Create a World Map– We would like to pinpoint, on a large world map, where your child and the service member(s) have lived/been stationed due to military duties. This is a great way to start a conversation between students, which can show how they are similar and different. Please provide a
list of these places (see attached form) and have your child turn it in by 4/22/19to their teacher or the front office.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact, Claudia V. Castañeda Lopez, our School Social Work Intern who is coordinating these activities, at cvcasta@usc.edu
